download subtitles when they are avalaible
They are many RSS subtitles' feeds, would it be possible to make TED download them when they are avalaible ? I think they do have the same name format that the shows, so maybe it wouldn't be too hard to do ?

You can also download TED subtitles through this web site, just given the URL you can browse all available languages and download the subtitle file for it. Please try it and feed me back, there is a suggestion link :)

I think it would be super if my kids who are not mother tongue English speakers could have the option to have subtitles.

I use this site for subtitles: http://www.subtitlesource.org
It always has the subtitle for the release that TED downloaded. -

if the team is interested to add italian subtitles support:
http://www.italiansubs.net/
these guys are amazing, top notch subtitles generally released the day after the episode is aired in the US.
I'm not affiliated, just a fan of them :-D -

I vote for http://www.opensubtitles.com too, they have a open API and it's already used in some Video Players like Totem (Ubuntu Linux) and ALLPlayer (Windows).

There's also the feeds at http://www.tvsubtitles.net/showrss.php
In any case, the most important are the english subtitles, since they allow other users to translate them to other languages.
Shooter.cn is one of the first uploading new subtitles in English, and you can create feeds too. Then the usually go to tvsubtitles.net and spread on. -

A subtitlesource.org you can get feeds of all shows in different languages. There's the orange configuration button, for example here:

It takes about 24h to have french subtitles for the most popular shows, such as Prison Break, Lost or HIMYM. But for many others, it takes much more time... It mainly depends on the motivation of the teams in charge.

Can you tell me some more about the quality of the subtitles and when they become available? I can imagine it takes a while for the translators before they finish the subtitles.

I agree it would be a nice extra feature but also one that requires some work I think. I added it as a feature request: http://www.rulecam.net/ted/bugs/index.php?do=details&task_id=208 but it's undecided in which version we'll implement it.
